Plain Breakfast

Ticket to see 大坝

Entrance of the dam

On the bus ride

Today we were supposed to have breakfast at 6.30am as usual but we woke up at 6.10 as we were all very sleepy due to the lack of sleep. We quickly wash up and found it strange that the sound system did not ring at about 6.25 when it should like yesterday. I went over to knock the doors of the others to see if they are awake and we can head down to breakfast together. Cynthia and Wei Qin just woke up when I knocked on their doors and so we hurried them and head down first. The dishes for breakfast are exactly the same as yesterday. I took half a bowl of plain porridge and 2 egg whites only just to eat for the sake of eating. We head back to our rooms and pack up as we are supposed to check out of the cruise today. I went to return our room key and get back my deposit of RMB$20. I ate some crackers we bought previously to fill up my stomach and drank plenty of plain water to make myself full. We checked out at 7am and board a bus to 看大坝 and the process of building it. We were explained the process of making the dam and were given time to take pictures. There were different stops where different stuff is explained and we are to take a bus ride like in Sentosa to get to our destination. We were told the idea of building the dam started about 100 years ago where 孙中山 foresee the vision of building a dam in china. However due to lack of resources and money, the idea was put off. Throughout the years, the idea was brought up several times but it was not confirmed till 1992 where 毛泽东 brought the idea up again and it was finally confirmed. The building of the dam started in 1994 and it is still awaiting final completion which is estimated to be in 2015. After the visit, we head back to 宜昌 for lunch but it is at a different restaurant. When we arrived, fire crackers where lighted up as someone was celebrating his birthday at the restaurant too. It was the first time I saw fire crackers so up close and the sound is deafening. Many of us were covering our ears and we walked quickly into the restaurant to have lunch as most of us were famished. The dishes were very nice and to our liking. I like the fried egg, vegetables and tomato beef the most. After lunch, we continued our journey back to Wuhan and many of us slept on the bus. The journey back seemed shorter and I assume that maybe it’s because we are too excited when we are heading there so we feel that the journey is very long. We went back to our dormitories and bathe. I asked Ron to packet me a bowl of fried rice as I was too tired out and I slacked in our dorms to do up on our blog entries.

Personal Reflection:

Today, I learnt that the dam, 大坝 is built for 3 main reasons. Firstly, it is to prevent flooding across the 长江河. By building the dam, many property and lives can be saved in case of flooding which happened in the 1992 where many lives were lost due to a serious flood which happens only once every 100 years. Secondly, the dam is built to shorten the route of ships when doing trading. By doing so, ships can shorten their distance of travel and money can be saved from the fuel or cost of operating the ship. Lastly, the dam is built to fulfill the dreams of every china citizens on building a huge dam in china.
